Shadow Ranch Estate
The seven acres of vineyards at Shadow Ranch are planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah and Grenache. All of the vineyards are being farmed organically and will be available for certification soon. The vineyards are planted in the fine-grained, well drained, decomposed granite which is common in the Fair Play region. Hilltop exposure positions the vines to receive cooling breezes in summer, preventing the grapes from maturing too quickly. In the winter, the hilltop exposure allows cold air to drain to the valley, which limits the damage from frost. This allows the grapes to stay on the vines long enough to develop the necessary complexity and concentration required to make great wine.
Duarte-Georgetown vineyard sits high atop the Georgetown divide about 25 miles North of Shadow Ranch. With 90 acres at 2500 feet, it is one of the largest high-elevation vineyards in California. The vineyard site is of deep red clay loam soils, which give the wines deep color and structured round tannins. Planted in 2002, John and Alexandra Duarte have created a state-of-the-art, high density vineyard conceived and farmed to produce ultra-premium Sierra Nevada wines. Shadow Ranch produces our Cabernet Sauvignon, along with the Grenache, Tempranillo, and Petite Sirah, from the fruit grown on Duarte-Georgetown.
